What are the cost factors in producing a CD-ROM?
Costs can be broken into three main components - design/authoring,
production, and packaging.
- Design & Authoring: This involves sourcing, collecting,
and combining content in a format which the user can access from
the CD-ROM. It involves graphics design, interface and navigation
design, audio, video, and testing. This cost is dependant on a
number of criteria including required quality, information volume,
design, and use of audio and video.
- Production costs are incurred in the physical production
of the CD-ROMs. The cost is made up of two components - a mastering
fee and a per unit fee. The mastering fee is charged for
preparing the CD-ROM for production. This fee is independent of
the number of CD-ROMs being produced. A per unit fee is
charged for each CD-ROM produced. Fees can range from 50c to 90c
per unit. The larger the volume of CDs ordered, the lower the
per unit fee.
- There is a range of Packaging alternatives - from basic
paper sleeves, to typical plastic jewel boxes, cardboard wallets,
to more elaborate box-sets. A packaging fee is usually a per unit
fee (for example paper sleeves can cost 0.15c per unit).
